Exploring the Power of Large Language Models in Software Development

Large Language Models (LLMs) are becoming increasingly popular. They're being used not just as smart tools, but also as parts of bigger software systems. These systems, called LLM-integrated applications, use LLMs to do tasks that would otherwise be tough or need a lot of coding. As this field grows, we need to figure out the best ways to talk about and understand these applications. This study offers a new way to categorize LLM-integrated applications. It helps us see how LLMs can be used and how to put them into software.

Researchers looked at recent examples of LLM-integrated applications to find out what's important. They tested their categorization system on more cases. This showed that applications use LLMs in many different ways and for different reasons. Often, these applications have more than one LLM part, which we call "LLM components. " To understand an application, we need to look at each LLM component separately. There are thirteen things we can use to describe an LLM component, like the skills used and the type of output. This way of categorizing helps us describe LLM-integrated applications clearly. It can help build new ideas in this new field of software engineering and make better systems. Even though there are challenges, using LLMs could change how software is built.
