Eye on the Tropics: Hurricane Oscar Hits Great Inagua Island

In the early hours of Sunday, Hurricane Oscar blew ashore on Great Inagua Island, according to the National Hurricane Center. With maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and a central pressure of 988, Oscar is a force to reckon with. The storm has set off hurricane warnings for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Southeast Bahamas. Forecasters predict Oscar to bump into Cuba's northeastern coast tonight as a Category 1 hurricane. Florida, on the other hand, is expected to escape unscathed due to a high-pressure system shielding the state from tropical disturbances until the end of the month.
