Facing the Ax: Federal Workers Brace for Trump's Blow

As the new year approaches, federal employees are steeling themselves for a storm. President Donald Trump's new team, led by tech moguls Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, aims to slash government spending by $2 trillion. This includes trimming the nearly 3 million-strong civil service workforce. But there's a significant hurdle: federal labor unions. About 25% of federal workers are unionized, and these unions have been fortifying their positions with favorable collective bargaining agreements. Trump's past attempts to weaken unions were reversed by President Joe Biden, but this time, labor leaders expect a more aggressive approach. Trump's team includes figures from conservative think tanks like the America First Policy Institute, who advocate for making federal workers at-will employees and restricting union grievances. The MERIT Act, reintroduced by Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga. , aligns with this agenda.

Another tool in Trump's arsenal is the Schedule F designation, which makes it easier to fire federal workers for political reasons. This could be particularly devastating for diverse groups like food safety inspectors, retirees, and veterans who rely on federal services. Jacqueline Simon, policy director for the American Federation of Government Employees, stresses that unions protect workers from unfair terminations. She warns that weakening federal labor protections could lead to more pandemics, poverty among the elderly, and reduced care for veterans.
