Fair Park's Money Mess: What's Really Going On?
South Dallas, USAMonday, October 7, 2024
Fair Park First said they can't talk about Luallen because it's a personal matter. But they need to tell the public if the donor money is being used right. Dallas voters have given a lot of money for Fair Park, including $50 million for big projects in 2017 and $300 million for infrastructure improvements. Plus, Fair Park First raised $48 million from private donations.
The nonprofit ordered an audit to check if the donor money was used correctly. The new board president, Veletta Forsythe Lill, said the audit will look at donations from 2022 and 2023. Oak View Group gave a list of bills they think should be paid with donor funds. But the audit won't be done until August. Forsythe Lill said it's taking a while because the finances are complicated.
Fair Park First also made changes to their rules to make sure money is used correctly. They're adding more people to check the finances and will share the audit findings when it's done. But they need to be careful not to reveal who gave the money.
We can't say for sure if money was misused until the audit is finished. But the city and everyone involved need to be honest about any mistakes and how they'll fix them. People in South Dallas need to see that things are changing for the better.
