Farmers' Views on GM Crops: More Than Just Profit

Small farmers in China are facing a big change with the introduction of genetically modified (GM) crop collectivization. The government is pushing for this change to make small farmers more efficient and competitive. However, not many farmers are joining in. Why is that? A study in Guangdong and Xinjiang found that it's not just about making more money. Farmers also want to stay independent and need to feel safe about the risks involved.

The study showed that farmers who think GM crops can help them adapt to the market on their own are more likely to join. But their willingness to join also depends on how risky they think GM crops are. Surprisingly, things like age, education, and farming experience didn't make much of a difference. This study can help policymakers understand what farmers really need and make better plans for GM crops.
