Fast‑Track Radiotherapy: A Simple Test for Same‑Day Treatment

Radiotherapy can now be delivered on the same day it is planned, thanks to a technique called Direct‑to‑Unit adaptive radiotherapy (ART). This method skips the traditional CT scan and builds a treatment plan directly from diagnostic images. It then tweaks that plan in real time to match any changes in the patient’s anatomy or position. Because these workflows are new, there is no official way to check that they work correctly from start to finish. Existing testing tools are expensive and usually only used once, making them impractical for everyday use.

To solve this problem, researchers created a cheap and practical testing system. They used a common CIRS ZEUS phantom—a simple object that mimics human tissue—to run through the entire ART process. By doing so, they could confirm that each step of the workflow produced accurate results without spending a lot of money. This approach gives hospitals an easy, low‑cost way to verify their same‑day treatment systems. It also helps ensure patients receive safe and effective care while keeping costs down.
