Festive Corn Boil Brings Community Together

The Sugar Grove Corn Boil—a yearly gathering that runs from Thursday to Sunday at Volunteer Park—draws between 30 000 and 35 000 visitors each year. A volunteer group runs the event, offering carnival rides, kids’ games, food stalls and live music. The festival began almost 60 years ago and remains a highlight for residents of the Fox Valley.

Music is a Major Draw

Friday night featured three bands:

• The Dog & Pony Show – unplugged tunes
• A Led Zeppelin tribute act
• The Karen Hart Band, covering The Pretenders and Heart

Joel Calderone, a longtime attendee, says seeing the community together helps restore normalcy after the pandemic.

“It’s nice to have people out and mingling,” he says.

Food Headlines the Schedule

• Annabell’s Bar‑B‑Q supplies pulled pork and pork on a stick.
• Shorewood grill master Karl Grant reports grilling over 4 000 pork chops last year, emphasizing a low‑and‑slow technique to keep the meat juicy.
• The corn itself is boiled by volunteer Dave Burroughs, who has helped for 25 years. This year the team boiled 8 000 ears of corn, up from 6 000 the previous year.

First‑Time Visitors

The Aurora family, Ryan and Jessica Chrisman, appreciate the nostalgic feel.

“We love to socialize, see the community, eat corn and maybe catch a concert,” Ryan says.
Jessica notes that such festivals leave a lasting imprint on people’s memories.
