Filming Begins for Östlund’s ‘Boredom in the Skies’

Director Ruben Östlund has kicked off principal photography in Budapest for his upcoming satirical film, ‘Boredom in the Skies’. The movie, set on a transcontinental flight from England to Australia, revolves around a malfunctioning entertainment system, leaving passengers with nothing to do but face their own boredom. The shoot is expected to last for 70 days between January and May 2025. The production has constructed a special set featuring a real Boeing 747, specifically acquired for the project. Among the cast are Connor Swindells, Daniel Webber, Wayne Blair, Dan Wyllie, Lindsay Duncan, Allan Corduner, Sofia Tjelta Sydness, Erin Ainsworth, Myles Kamwendo, Sanna Sundqvist, Tea Stjärne, and Swedish artist Benjamin Ingrosso, joining previously announced actors Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Keanu Reeves, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton, and Tobias Menzies.

The film is a collaborative effort between Plattform Produktion (Sweden), Essential Films (Germany), and Parisienne de Production (France). Co-producers include BBC Film, Film i Väst, Sveriges Television, ZDF/ARTE, ARTE France Cinéma, SF Studios, Eye Eye Pictures (Norway), and Paloma Productions (Denmark). Financial backing comes from the Swedish Film Institute, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA), the Norwegian Film Institute, the Danish Film Institute, and with participation from Canal+, Disney+, and ARTE France. The project also receives support from Creative Europe MEDIA. World sales are managed by Coproduction Office, with A24 already securing the U. S. distribution rights. This marks Östlund’s second English-language film and his seventh feature film overall, following ‘The Guitar Mongoloid’ (2004), ‘Involuntary’ (2008), ‘Play’ (2011), ‘Force Majeure’ (2014), and his Palme d’Or winners, ‘The Square’ (2017) and ‘Triangle of Sadness’ (2022).
