Finding a Middle Ground on Abortion: A Challenge for Republican Candidates

The abortion issue continues to be a sticking point for many Republican candidates, particularly in key Senate races. Despite the party's confidence in taking control of the Senate, some Republicans are warning that comments like those made by Ohio GOP Senate hopeful Bernie Moreno, which seemed to downplay the importance of abortion for women over 50, are not helping their cause. Moreno's comments have sparked criticism from Democrats, who have been hammering Republicans on the issue across the country. In the seven most competitive Senate races, Democratic campaigns and outside groups have launched 33 TV ads about abortion, while only one Republican ad has mentioned the issue. This is a stark contrast to the 2022 midterms, when Democrats successfully deployed a similar strategy to keep control of the Senate.

The challenge for Republicans is not only to respond to Democratic attacks on abortion but also to find a middle ground that resonates with voters. A recent NBC News national poll found that a majority of voters (54%) believe Vice President Kamala Harris would deal with the issue of abortion better than former President Donald Trump. This is a significant advantage for Harris, who has been able to define herself as a champion of reproductive rights. GOP Senate candidates have been slow to proactively talk about the issue, with only a few launching TV ads that mention abortion. These ads typically feature the candidates saying they wouldn't support a federal ban and pledging to protect in vitro fertilization. However, this may not be enough to stem the tide of Democratic attacks on the issue.
