Young adults, whether they are athletes or not, often face mental health challenges. These issues can come from many sources, like stress from school, work, or even just daily life. But what if a simple change in diet could make a difference? Finger millet, a type of grain, is packed with good stuff like antioxidants and fiber. It might just be the key to better mental health and thinking skills. A recent study looked at how eating finger millet affects young adults, both athletes and non-athletes. In this study, 57 young men, aged 18 to 25, were split into two groups: those who ate finger millet and those who stuck to regular grains like rice and wheat. The finger millet group replaced a third of their usual grains with this super grain for 60 days. The results were interesting. Athletes who ate finger millet saw improvements in their sleep and a reduction in feelings of depression and anxiety. Non-athletes who didn't eat finger millet actually saw an increase in anxiety, depression, and overall psychological distress. This suggests that finger millet might help maintain mental health in non-athletes and improve it in athletes. But that's not all. The study also looked at meta-cognitive skills, which are basically the skills that help you think about your own thinking. Athletes who ate finger millet showed significant improvements in these skills. Non-athletes, however, didn't show much change. So, what does this all mean? It seems that finger millet could be a simple and effective way to boost mental health and cognitive skills, especially for athletes. But more research is needed to fully understand its benefits.
