A big fire hit the Moss Landing Battery Plant recently. Authorities told everyone to evacuate right away and close all entry points to their homes. Dr. Steven Prager, a physician from Salinas Valley Health, joined a conversation about the fire. He explained that the smoke can irritate anyone's nose and lungs, but it's even worse for people with lung diseases like asthma or COPD. Children and the elderly are especially vulnerable.

Chemical fires can make your eyes and nose hurt at low concentrations. At higher concentrations, it can be hard to breathe and may even permanently damage the lungs. So, it's crucial to be careful and follow the evacuation orders.

To protect your lungs, close windows and doors, and turn off air systems. If you can, wear an N95 mask, but it might not block all chemical particles. The best thing to do is stay indoors and evacuate if told to do so.
