Fitness Bands Could Spot MS Progression Early

Baltimore, Maryland, USA,Thursday, March 5, 2026
Researchers have found that everyday fitness trackers might signal when multiple sclerosis (MS) is getting worse. The study followed 238 people with MS for about three years, giving them wrist‑worn devices that recorded how much they moved, how long they sat still, and their sleep patterns. Participants wore the trackers continuously for two weeks each time, then repeated the cycle every three months. During that period, 120 participants experienced disease progression.
Those whose activity dropped early in the day were 20 % more likely to see their MS worsen. Lower morning activity also correlated with brain shrinkage, especially in overall volume, gray matter, and the thalamus. The researchers say that using a cheap, everyday gadget could help spot subtle changes before they become severe. Early detection might reduce long‑term disability and speed up testing of new treatments. More studies are needed to confirm the link, but the idea that a simple band on the wrist could provide medical insight is promising.
