The Good
Flint saw a lot of changes in 2025. New buildings went up, and some old problems stayed. It was a year of big plans and a few setbacks.
New Spots in Town
- YMCA Downtown: A new YMCA opened downtown in April as part of the LiveWell on Harrison project. It's not just for workouts; it includes homes and health services.
- County Office Building: In July, a new county office building opened on Saginaw Street, consolidating various county jobs in one location.
- The Hub: A new school called The Hub opened in September, the first new school in Flint in over 50 years. It's focused on science and tech.
- MSU Public Health Building: Michigan State University added a new public health building downtown, showcasing the university's collaboration with the city.
The Not-So-Good
- Blight Cleanup Project: A project to clean up blight in Flint ended badly. The Neighborhood Engagement Hub stopped the project due to lack of proper documentation and uncertainty about the work's quality.
- Davison Township Plans: Davison Township is considering building a new town hall and police station but hasn't decided on the plan yet.
- Swartz Creek Schools: Swartz Creek Schools got a new interim boss, Wayne Wright, who will be there for about six months while they look for a permanent replacement.
The Future
- Historical Groups: Four places that teach about Flint's history now have endowments, ensuring they'll receive annual funding to stay open and continue their work.
