Flood Alert in the French Broad River Valley

The French Broad River Valley is experiencing severe flooding, with the lowest recorded stage since measurements began in 1895. Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in Florida on September 26, is still affecting the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued flash flood warnings for several counties in North Carolina, including Person, Alamance, Orange, and Durham. The NWS has warned residents of possible catastrophic damage and injury if they remain near the Lake Lure Dam. Although the dam has not broken, the NWS has declared that dam failure is imminent. Residents below the dam are advised to evacuate to higher ground immediately.
Flooding is not the only concern in the region. The NWS has also warned of hazards such as downed trees and powerlines, and power outages. The agency reminded residents that nearly half of hurricane fatalities occur after the storm has passed. The flooding in the French Broad River Valley is not limited to one area. Madison County, Transylvania County, Henderson County, and Buncombe County have all been affected by flood advisories.
