Flowers of Controversy: Miley Cyrus Sued for Alleged Copyright Infringement
USATuesday, September 17, 2024
The controversy surrounding "Flowers" began when fans noticed apparent similarities between the two songs. Cyrus's fans pointed out that she seemingly flips the lyrics from Mars's song, while also using a similar melody in her chorus. The lyrics to "Flowers" include the chorus: "I can buy myself flowers/ Write my name in the sand/ Talk to myself for hours/ Say things you don't understand/ I can take myself dancing/ And I can hold my own hand/ Yeah, I can love me better than you can."
Cyrus is named as a co-writer on "Flowers" along with songwriter and producer Aldae and songwriter/producer Michael Pollack. Mars, on the other hand, co-wrote "When I Was Your Man" with Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, and Andrew Wyatt.
