Food Trucks Move Into Downtown Spokane: A Look at the New Rules

Spokane, Washington, USA,Sunday, April 12, 2026

Spokane is considering allowing food trucks to set up shop in more downtown spots. The city council will discuss a small plan that could drop a $60 permit fee for trucks that stay in town more than two weeks each year. That fee is rarely used, so it would cost the city only about $500 a year to keep.

The plan also wants to let trucks park in any lot, as long as the owner says it’s OK. Right now, only paved lots are allowed.

The biggest change would let trucks operate downtown without having to get a signed permission form from the building owner next to where they park. Truck owners say that paperwork is a waste of time, especially when the fee itself is so small.

Some truck operators own restaurants too, and the current rules stop trucks from parking within 50 feet of a restaurant. The new changes would not change that rule, so restaurants still keep their space.

The city says moving trucks downtown could bring more people to walk around and eat, which would help places that normally have quiet streets. But a downtown partner worries that without the permission step, the city might lose control over how many trucks appear and where they park. They also fear that some vendors could ignore health rules if they don’t have a city permit.

Health officials say it is important to keep food safety checks in place, and they have asked the council to wait a month before approving the new rules.

The debate shows that while easing rules could help food trucks and shoppers, it also raises questions about safety, space management, and the city’s ability to enforce standards. The outcome will decide how Spokane balances growth with responsibility.
