Football Player Discovers Hope at Cancer Center Visit

Daniel Hardy, a defensive end for the Chicago Bears, recently visited Advocate Sherman Hospital's Cancer Center in Elgin. He wanted to inspire patients and staff by sharing gifts and encouraging words. Hardy has a personal connection to cancer: his dad passed away from it, and his mom fought and won against breast cancer. During his tour, Hardy learned about a special tool called the "cold cap. " This cap helps patients keep their hair during chemotherapy. It reduces how much chemotherapy reaches the hair follicles. One patient using this cap was Kate Thommes, a school board vice president. She was in her third chemotherapy session for breast cancer.

Thommes and her husband explained how the cold cap works. It's connected to a machine that keeps it cool. Hardy gave out gift boxes from Bears Care and Lemons of Love. Lemons of Love is a charity started by Jill Swanson, who was treated for colon cancer. She began making gift boxes for other cancer patients after receiving one herself. Hardy's visit brought joy to the patients. "I feel like a celebrity, " said Fanny Navarette when she got to take a picture with Hardy. After visiting with patients, Hardy saw a check for $15, 000 being donated to the hospital. This money will help pay for cold caps for patients who can't afford them. It will also support community outreach to teach women about breast health and mammograms. Hardy praised the staff, saying, "You are the real heroes, helping people every day. Your work is more important than mine. "
