Ford is seriously considering discontinuing its electric F-150 Lightning pickup. This decision follows the halt in production earlier this year due to a fire at an aluminum plant. The company is now prioritizing gas and hybrid trucks, which are more profitable and require less aluminum.

Financial Struggles in Electric Vehicle Division

The F-150 Lightning is part of Ford's electric vehicle division, Model e, which has been incurring significant losses. In the third quarter of 2025, the division lost $1.4 billion, bringing the total loss for the first nine months of the year to $3.6 billion. Most of these losses stem from current electric vehicles like the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, with the remainder attributed to investments in new electric models.

Shift to Affordable Electric Vehicles

Ford is now redirecting its focus toward smaller, more affordable electric vehicles. They are developing a new platform called the Universal EV platform, which will enable the production of electric vehicles priced around $30,000. The first vehicle on this platform is expected to be a midsize electric pickup, similar to the Ford Maverick or Ranger, set to launch in 2027.

CEO Jim Farley's Statement

CEO Jim Farley stated that $30,000 electric vehicles are "not a distant plan." He emphasized that such vehicles are "right around the corner" for Ford. This strategic shift indicates Ford's commitment to making electric vehicles more accessible and affordable for a broader market.
