Former DC Police Chief Convicted for Aiding Proud Boys

Shane Lamond, who used to lead Washington's Metropolitan Police intelligence unit, has been found guilty of leaking information to a Proud Boys leader. This happened just before the infamous January 6 attack on the U. S. Capitol. The leader, Enrique Tarrio, is currently serving 22 years for his role in the attack. A federal judge, Amy Berman Jackson, declared Lamond guilty of four serious charges, including lying to investigators and obstructing justice. Tarrio had testified during the trial, admitting he lied to his group about getting tips from the police.

Prosecutors argued that Lamond acted as a "double agent" by warning Tarrio that there was a warrant for his arrest. This was related to the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner during a previous trip to Washington. Tarrio claimed he didn't wish to get arrested but wanted to use his arrest as a publicity stunt. Former President Donald Trump has promised to pardon some defendants involved in the Jan. 6 attack, but it's uncertain if Tarrio is on the list. Lamond's defense tried to reason that his communications with Tarrio were part of his job, but prosecutors found messages where Lamond expressed support for the Proud Boys even after the attack.
