Former FTX Engineer Avoids Jail Time for Helping Catch Bankman-Fried

In New York, a former FTX executive named Nishad Singh was spared a prison sentence on Wednesday. The federal judge commended Singh's significant cooperation in exposing the multibillion-dollar fraud orchestrated by FTX's founder, Sam Bankman-Fried. Singh, who was the company's engineering director, only learned about the misappropriated funds two months before the scam was exposed. FTX, once a prominent cryptocurrency exchange with celebrity endorsements and a Super Bowl ad, crashed into bankruptcy in November 2022. Bankman-Fried was arrested a month later in the Bahamas. Singh, 29, testified last year at Bankman-Fried's trial, expressing shock and horror at the extent of the fraud.

At the sentencing, Singh apologized, saying he had strayed from his values. Bankman-Fried was found guilty and is currently serving a 25-year sentence. Another key witness, Caroline Ellison, received a two-year prison term. The judge distinguished Singh's cooperation, noting he wasn't involved from the beginning like Ellison. Singh's lawyer argued for no jail time, emphasizing that Singh was unaware of the billions stolen until late in the game. The prosecutor credited Singh with providing crucial information early on, including insights into campaign finance violations and private conversations with Bankman-Fried. This helped accelerate the case against multiple individuals.
