In a surprising turn of events, Donald Trump avoided any jail time, fines, or probation in his hush money case involving a payment to an adult film actress who claimed an affair with him. Though he was found guilty, he received an unconditional discharge just days before starting his second term. Prosecutors were displeased with Trump's attacks on the judge, which they believed weakened the rules of law. Trump's defense team immediately announced plans to appeal the decision.
The judge handling the case, Juan Merchan, clarified that the discharge aimed to protect the presidency, not Trump himself. During a virtual appearance, Trump described the experience as "terrible" and continued to insist on his innocence. Despite Trump's attempts to stall sentencing, the Supreme Court refused his request for immunity. The discharge grants Trump the chance to appeal while respecting presidential immunity.
