France's Nuclear Umbrella: A New Shield for Europe?
Paris, FranceThursday, March 6, 2025
France is still committed to NATO and its partnership with the US. But Macron thinks France needs to do more to be independent in defense and security matters. He plans to invite other European leaders to Paris to discuss a plan for lasting peace in Ukraine. This could include sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine after a peace deal is signed.
Macron's ideas aren't new. Germany's likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has suggested talking to France and the UK about extending their nuclear protection. Macron has mentioned this idea before, saying that if other European leaders want to discuss greater autonomy and deterrence, they should start talking about it.
Macron met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently. A small group of countries is working on a plan to stop the fighting in Ukraine. This plan could include a limited ceasefire for a month. Macron revealed this in an interview, showing that France and the UK are working together to find a solution.
