Freight transportation and logistics are essential for moving goods across the country.  In February, a company based in Fort Smith, Arkansas, saw a slight dip in tonnage, but it was not as bad as expected.  This company, which operates truckload and less-than-truckload services, managed to keep its terminals busy by taking on more truckload freight.  This helped to offset the decline in tonnage.

The company reported that tonnage in its asset-based operations was down by only 2% compared to the same month last year.  This was a big improvement from the 9. 2% decline seen in January.  The February result was a mix of steady shipment numbers and a slight decrease in the weight per shipment.  This means that while the number of shipments stayed the same, the average weight of each shipment went down by 2%.

Revenue per day also took a small hit, dropping by 2% year over year.  This followed a 2. 9% decline in January.  The company attributed this to a less favorable mix of freight.  This meant that the revenue per hundredweight (yield) stayed flat in February, unlike the 7% increase seen in January.  January’s yield had benefited from a significant decrease in weight per shipment.

Despite these challenges, the company reported that yields, excluding fuel, were up by a mid-single-digit percentage for the first two months of the first quarter.  This suggests that the company is still managing to increase its revenue per shipment, even after accounting for fuel costs.  The company also noted that the pricing environment remains rational, meaning that prices are stable and not fluctuating wildly.  This stability is important for planning and budgeting.

Contractual price increases at the unit averaged 4. 5% during the fourth quarter.  This means that the company was able to negotiate higher prices for its services, which can help to offset some of the declines in tonnage and revenue.  The company's ability to take on more truckload freight and negotiate higher prices shows that it is adapting to changing market conditions.
