French Investigation into Gaza Flotilla Treatment
French prosecutors have launched a preliminary inquiry following reports that Israeli forces may have tortured and committed war crimes against French activists aboard a Gaza-bound flotilla. The case was opened after a referral from the foreign ministry on May 28, in line with France’s criminal procedure rules that require officials to report suspected crimes.
Investigation Oversight
The investigation is now being handled by the Office for Combating Crimes Against Humanity and Hate Crimes, which deals with serious offenses. The office is tasked with gathering evidence to confirm the allegations and determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
Allegations
Organizers claim that several activists were:
- Injured and hospitalized
- Subjected to at least fifteen sexual assaults, including rape
These allegations have drawn criticism from Canada, Germany, and Italy as well.
Israeli Response
Israeli authorities deny any wrongdoing. Despite the denial, the international community has expressed concern over the incident.
Current Status
French authorities are still gathering evidence to confirm the claims. The outcome of the preliminary inquiry will determine whether formal charges are pursued.
