Friendships on the Court: Middle Schoolers Bond Over Pickleball

At Crayton Middle School, a special bond is forming on the Pickleball court. The school's Special Olympics Unified program brings together students from both special and general education classes to engage in physical activities. Jazayah Grimes, a deaf student, has found a real connection with his peers through the game. He loves playing and interacting with his friends on the court. Jazayah communicates through American Sign Language (ASL), but that hasn't stopped him from becoming close with his classmates. Gray Cobia, an eighth-grader, notes that Jazayah's positive attitude and constant smile make their friendship effortless, despite the language barrier.

The program has inspired others to learn ASL to better communicate with Jazayah. Ross Stewart, the Unified Program Lead, is amazed by how naturally the students have taken to the language and the kindness they show towards one another. He points out that it's not just about inclusion; it's about making sure everyone feels like they truly belong. The Unified program emphasizes student-led activities, allowing the kids to build their own friendships and connections on their own terms. Whether it's through playing sports or learning new skills, these moments of connection are fostering lasting friendships. Understanding and communication are key to these friendships. The initiative shown by the students to learn sign language is a testament to their compassion and willingness to include everyone.
