From Heist to Cosplay: The Magic: The Gathering Thieves of Gen Con

In 2023, Gen Con, the biggest tabletop gaming convention in America, was hit by a real-life heist. Two men were caught on camera stealing $300,000 worth of Magic: The Gathering cards. The suspects were arrested, charged, and are due for a jury trial in October. The cards were recovered, but the story didn't end there. During this year's Gen Con, a roving cosplay duo dressed up as the thieves, turning the meme into a reality. Partners Chris Chheng and Stephanie Szabo, along with Austin Jongeling, brought the idea to life, creating a hilarious and memorable experience for Gen Con attendees. The costume elements seemed simple enough, but the construction of the Castle Assault T-shirt proved to be a challenge. Szabo says, 'We bought some iron-on printer paper so we could print the logo on and iron it on. We didn’t realize you had to get a special type of paper to show up on a black T-shirt. So we did it at first, and it was not showing up. I’m like, Oh God, this is in a couple days.'

Despite the challenges, the trio managed to create a convincing and entertaining cosplay. The trio had the most fun building the cart prop, a hollow-core box covered in glued-on Magic cards to make it look like the cart was full. Chheng worked in a few Easter eggs for anyone who looked closely, including a few Black Lotuses and a single copy of the one-of-a-kind One Ring card. For Jongeling, the fun was in inventing and playing a character as the duo joined Gen Con’s annual costume parade and wandered the halls to be seen and photographed by attendees. Despite a few instances of the dreaded cosplay question 'What are you supposed to be?', the trio received an overwhelmingly positive response from Gen Con attendees. The consistent wave of laughter and joy on people's faces made the effort worthwhile for the trio. They skipped Gen Con’s formal costume contest, content to be in on the joke at one of their favorite annual their favorite annual events.
