From 'SNL' to Broadway: Former Writers' Comedic Journey

In 2008, comedian John Mulaney started his career at "Saturday Night Live" (SNL). He was teamed up with Simon Rich, a talented Harvard grad who had already made a name for himself with two short fiction collections. Their first sketch, “Cash for Silver, ” parodying cash-for-gold commercials, didn’t make it to air, but it left an impression. Fast forward to 2023, where Mulaney and Rich meet over breakfast in Midtown Manhattan. They can easily recall their old lines: “Send it! Don’t wait! Don’t ask! ” and “Send me silver right now! ” Despite the nostalgia, they were there to rehearse their new Broadway show, “All In: Comedy About Love, ” adapted from Rich’s prose pieces.

The show premiers at the Hudson Theater on December 22. Notable performers joining Mulaney include Renée Elise Goldsberry, Richard Kind, and Fred Armisen. Armisen, also an SNL alum, was originally slated to be the boatman in “Cash for Silver. ” As the performances continue, other famous faces like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jimmy Fallon, Aidy Bryant, Nick Kroll, and Tim Meadows will take the stage. Their journey from SNL writers to Broadway stars shows a fascinating evolution of their comic talents.
