Imagine opening a bag of chips or a bottle of juice, and seeing right there on the front, in plain language, whether it's high, medium, or low in stuff like saturated fat, sodium, or added sugar. That's what the FDA is proposing for packaged food and drinks to help Americans make healthier choices quicker. This new rule, which could be in effect by 2028, would put essential nutrient info right at your fingertips, making it easier to spot the not-so-healthy stuff.
But, it's not just about putting info on the front. The FDA chose these three nutrients—saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar—because they're big contributors to chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. The idea is, if you see it right away, maybe you'll think twice before buying.
Dr. Yian Gu from Columbia University Medical Center thinks it's a good move. "People want to know this stuff to make good decisions, " he says. But, he also points out that education is key. If people don't know how these nutrients affect their health, the extra info might not make much difference.
This proposal comes at a time when diet-related chronic diseases are on the rise in the U. S. Heart disease and diabetes are big issues, with obesity also being a major concern. The FDA wants to change that with these new labels.
But, it's not as simple as just adding a label. The FDA is giving a 120-day window for comments and may make changes based on feedback. Once final, big manufacturers will have three years to make changes, while smaller ones get an extra year.
Some in the food industry aren't too keen on the idea, saying it could confuse consumers. They prefer voluntary schemes like Facts Up Front and SmartLabel, which use QR codes for more detailed info.
Other countries like Chile and Brazil have similar front-of-package labels, and research shows they do influence buying habits. But, will it work the same way in the U. S. , where people might not like being told what to buy? Only time will tell.
