Future‑Proof Connectivity: Telecom Italia Eyes Premium Plans for Big Events
Telecom Italia is exploring a new revenue stream by charging extra for high‑speed internet at large gatherings.
In Italy, mobile providers often compete fiercely, offering huge data bundles for very low prices. This price battle has cut profits, so operators are looking for fresh revenue streams.
During the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, Telecom Italia rolled out extra 5G coverage at venues like Milan’s San Siro stadium. More than 60,000 fans and all the athletes could share videos instantly thanks to this special network boost.
The CEO, Pietro Labriola, said the service was free for now but might become a paid option. “If you pay extra for coffee and food at the stadium, why not pay more for ultra‑fast internet that we rely on daily?” he explained.
No exact prices or launch dates have been announced yet.
Labriola also highlighted that a tighter telecom market could help keep prices fair for consumers. He warned that without mergers, the industry may struggle to stay affordable.
Industry insiders say rivals Iliad and Wind Tre could merge, cutting the number of Italian mobile operators from four to three. This move might bring more stability and better pricing for everyday users.
