Australia Tightens Gambling Ads Rules

Australia has introduced fresh rules to curb gambling advertising, aiming to protect children from exposure.

  • Celebrity bans – Ads featuring celebrities are prohibited.
  • Online targeting – Only logged‑in users over 18 can see online ads.
  • Television limits
  • Maximum of three gambling ads per hour between 6 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
  • No gambling commercials during live sports in that window.
  • Radio restrictions – Ads banned at school drop‑off and pick‑up times.
  • Sports sponsorship ban – Gambling logos removed from sports uniforms, stadiums, and any sporting event.
  • Parental opt‑out – Parents can choose to block gambling ads for their children.

Critics say the policy still relies on parents instead of holding companies and platforms accountable, and that it may not fully address the health costs associated with gambling.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the reforms “the biggest gambling reform ever,” stating they tackle public health concerns and reduce children’s exposure to harmful advertising.

The new regulations will take effect in 2027, giving businesses time to adapt. The goal is to cut the daily amount of gambling promotion Australians see.
