Gates' Wealthy Pledge to Africa
Africa, Addis AbabaMonday, June 2, 2025
Gates sees AI as a tool that can revolutionize healthcare in Africa, much like mobile phones transformed banking. He pointed to Rwanda as an example, where AI-enabled ultrasound is being used to identify high-risk pregnancies. The Gates Foundation has three main priorities: ending preventable deaths of mothers and babies, ensuring the next generation is free from deadly infectious diseases, and lifting millions out of poverty. After 20 years, the foundation plans to wrap up its operations.
Gates has been inspired by other philanthropists, like investor Warren Buffett, to give away his wealth. However, his foundation has faced criticism. Some argue that it uses its charitable status to avoid taxes and has too much influence over the global health system. Gates is determined to make a significant impact before his time is up. He wants to be remembered for his generosity, not his wealth. This is a big task. It will take a lot of hard work and a lot of money.
