Gay Detroit Man's Murder: A Teenager is Charged
Detroit, USAThursday, October 10, 2024
Luis Mandujano, a neighbor who worked with Brisendine at a gay nightclub, discovered his body after he didn't show up for work. The police later arrested Al-Alikhan and charged him with first-degree murder, felony murder, and unlawful vehicle driving. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy stated that the teenager’s nearing 18th birthday and the heinous nature of the crime were factors in trying him as an adult.
The case has raised concerns about hate crimes in the LGBTQ community. According to the FBI, anti-LGBTQ hate crimes have been on the rise. While the prosecutor hasn’t formally charged Al-Alikhan with a hate crime yet, the investigation hints at this possibility. Mandujano has started a GoFundMe campaign to cover Brisendine's funeral expenses and support local LGBTQ nonprofits that combat hate.
