Gaza Air Strike Leaves Seven Dead, Talks for Ceasefire Resumed

A recent Israeli air attack in Gaza City caused the deaths of seven people, including two women, and wounded fifteen others, many of them children. The strike hit a large tent camp in the city’s center. Israeli officials said the target was “terrorists, ” but gave no further explanation. The incident comes as Egypt has restarted negotiations in Cairo with Hamas and other Palestinian groups. The goal is to protect a fragile ceasefire that began after the conflict started in October 2023. Leaders from Gaza’s ruling party, Hamas, and other factions will discuss how to move forward. Hamas wants Israel to stop attacks in Gaza, allow more aid into the area, and withdraw its forces back to the lines set by the ceasefire. The group also seeks guarantees that any future actions will be based on the first phase of their agreement before moving to a second phase that would involve disarmament and further troop withdrawals.

Since the ceasefire began, Gaza health officials report about 950 Palestinians have died from Israeli strikes. Israel says its attacks are aimed at preventing imminent threats and that it permits aid shipments into Gaza. The war, which started after Hamas launched attacks on Israel in October 2023, has already claimed around 73, 000 lives in Gaza, mostly civilians. Four Israeli soldiers have been killed by militants during the same period. International mediators from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and a U. S. board are working to keep the ceasefire alive. Their hope is that ending Israeli strikes will allow negotiations to move forward and reduce further loss of life.
