Gaza Faces Deadly Storms Amid Ongoing Crisis
Heavy Rains and Strong Winds Claim Lives
Recently, heavy rains and strong winds have taken 14 lives, including three young children. The storm hit hard because many people are living in tents and makeshift homes, which are no match for the harsh weather. Families are left soaked and shivering.
Worsening Conditions Due to War
The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing war that has destroyed much of Gaza. Many people have no choice but to live in tents, which flood easily. Aid groups report that essential supplies, like building materials and fuel, are not getting through, making the storms more dangerous than they should be.
Families in Desperate Situations
Families are desperate. One mother, Um Mustafa, shared how her food and belongings were ruined by the rain. She cried out for help in the middle of the night, her children soaked and cold. Tragically, an eight-month-old baby named Rahaf didn't survive the cold. Over 27,000 tents were swept away, affecting around 250,000 people.
Aid and Blockades
A truce was reached last October, allowing aid to flow into Gaza. However, aid groups say that basic supplies are still being blocked. They argue that this is not just a weather problem but a man-made disaster. On the other hand, Israel claims they are sending in hundreds of aid trucks daily and planning for the upcoming winter.
Ongoing Challenges
Despite the truce, there are still big hurdles. The US wants to move forward, but Israel has conditions. They want the return of the last deceased hostage and are dealing with a standoff with Hamas militants. This leaves the people of Gaza in a tough spot, facing both the elements and the fallout of war.
