Gaza Faces Deadly Storms as Aid Shortages Worsen
14 Lives Lost, Including Three Children
Gaza is facing severe challenges as heavy rain and strong winds have claimed the lives of 14 people, including three children. The health authorities in Gaza report that the storms have exacerbated the already dire living conditions for the residents.
Devastating Impact on Shelters
Many Palestinians are living in tents or temporary shelters due to the destruction of their homes caused by the ongoing war. These makeshift shelters offer little protection against the relentless rain. Oxfam, an international aid organization, highlights that the tents are flooding with water, sewage, and mud, a situation they attribute to the insufficient aid reaching the region.
Desperate Cries for Help
The humanitarian crisis is palpable. Um Mustafa, a local resident, recounted how her food and clothes were soaked, leaving her and her children drenched and cold. Her desperate cries for help in the middle of the night underscore the severity of the situation.
Extensive Damage and Loss of Life
The storms have destroyed over 27,000 tents, and a baby named Rahaf tragically lost her life due to the cold. The Hamas-run government reports that at least 250,000 people have been affected by this disaster.
Aid Blockages and Disputes
Despite a truce agreed upon by Israel and Hamas in October, which allowed aid to start flowing into Gaza, Oxfam claims that Israel is still blocking critical supplies such as shelter materials, fuel, and water infrastructure. This, they argue, is worsening the humanitarian crisis.
Israel, on the other hand, maintains that they are fulfilling their obligations. They assert that hundreds of trucks full of aid enter Gaza daily and that they have sent nearly 270,000 tents and tarps to the region. However, the reality on the ground tells a different story.
Uncertain Future of the Truce
The truce remains fragile. The United States is pushing for the next phase, but Israel has set conditions, including the return of the last dead hostage. Additionally, Israel is resisting efforts to address the remaining Hamas fighters in southern Gaza.
