Gaza's Hunger Crisis: A Desperate Search for Food
GazaThursday, May 29, 2025
The WFP has consistently warned about the deteriorating conditions on the ground and the risks imposed by limiting humanitarian aid. They have called for an immediate increase in food assistance to reassure people that they will not starve. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) also condemned the incident, blaming the ongoing Israeli blockade for forcing people to take desperate measures.
The looting at the WFP warehouse came just a day after chaos erupted at an aid distribution site in Gaza. Thousands of desperate Palestinians rushed to receive food supplies, leading to a chaotic scene. Israeli troops fired warning shots into the air, and US contractors overseeing the site briefly withdrew. Videos from the distribution site showed large crowds rushing the facilities, tearing down fencing and climbing over barriers.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been ongoing for 600 days, with more than 54, 000 Gazans killed since the war began. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that Israeli strikes have killed over 3, 900 Palestinians since a two-month ceasefire collapsed in March. The situation is dire, with civilians fearing death by either Israeli strikes or hunger.
The international community has called on Israel to halt its devastating strikes on civilian life and infrastructure. Sigrid Kaag, interim UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, warned that the entire population of Gaza is facing the risk of famine. The limited aid permitted into the enclave is barely enough to keep people alive.
