Georgian Election: What Went Down and What It Means
Georgia, TbilisiWednesday, October 30, 2024
The Georgian Dream party has been accused of becoming more authoritarian, passing laws that sound a lot like those in Russia. They’ve targeted media, non-government groups that get foreign money, and even the LGBTQ+ community.
Russia’s President Putin might be happy with the results. Georgia is seen as a prize in the contest between Russia and the EU. The opposition plans to challenge the results, and things could get tense. The prime minister has denied any wrongdoing, but the situation is already ugly and might get worse.
Despite all this, some people in Georgia still support maintaining good relations with Russia. This could be a big signal for what’s to come in the region.
