Germany's Call: Keep Young Ukrainians Home
Friedrich Merz, Germany's leader, had an extensive discussion with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Merz emphasized that young Ukrainian men are crucial for their home country and should remain there.
Surge in Ukrainian Refugees
Recently, a significant number of young Ukrainians have been moving to Germany. In the past month alone, over 79,000 Ukrainian refugees arrived in Europe, marking the highest number since August 2024. This increase follows Ukraine's decision in August 2025 to allow men aged 18 to 22 to leave the country freely.
Germany's Refugee Situation
Germany is currently hosting the largest number of Ukrainian refugees in Europe, with over 1.2 million Ukrainians residing there. This accounts for approximately 28.3% of the total EU refugees.
Changes in Refugee Benefits
Merz also highlighted Germany's plans to modify the benefits for Ukrainian refugees. The aim is to make employment more appealing than relying on welfare. Starting April 1, 2025, new arrivals will receive benefits under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act instead of the Citizen's Allowance. While this means reduced financial support, refugees will still be able to work and receive job offers.
Energy Scandal in Ukraine
During their conversation, Merz and Zelenskiy also addressed the energy scandal in Ukraine, which has been a significant issue. Germany continues to monitor the situation closely.
