On Monday, mourners paid their respects near the site of the tragic Christmas market attack in Magdeburg. Investigators are still trying to figure out why a Saudi doctor, who has lived in Germany since 2006, drove into the bustling market, killing five people and injuring up to 235 others. This attack, coming just before a national election, has sparked concerns about deepening social divisions in the country. The suspect, who called himself an ex-Muslim and supported far-right views online, didn't fit the usual profile of extremist attackers. German Justice Minister Volker Wissing said the man's confusing political statements made it hard for security authorities to predict his actions. Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck warned about the spread of online misinformation and urged people not to let hatred take root. In a related incident, police in Bremerhaven detained a man who threatened violence against people of Arabic appearance at a Christmas market.
