Germany's President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has decided to dissolve the country's parliament and call for new elections on February 23. This move comes after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government lost a confidence vote and collapsed due to disputes over the economy. Steinmeier believes that a new election is the best way to form a stable government that can handle Germany's challenges.
The president made this decision because there was no agreement among political parties on forming a new government. He emphasized the need for a government that can act and a reliable majority in parliament, especially during tough times. Since the constitution doesn't allow parliament to dissolve itself, the president had to make this call.
The election will be held within 60 days of parliament's dissolution. Leaders of major parties have already agreed on the election date of February 23, which is seven months earlier than planned. Steinmeier warned about potential outside interference in the election, citing examples from other countries.
The campaign is already underway. Current polls show that Scholz's party is trailing behind the conservative opposition led by Friedrich Merz. Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck from the environmentalist Greens is also a contender for the top job. If the polls hold, Merz could become the next chancellor, likely forming a coalition with another party.
Key issues in the election include immigration, reviving the economy, and supporting Ukraine against Russia. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which is against immigration, has nominated Alice Weidel as their candidate for chancellor. However, other parties refuse to work with them, making it unlikely for them to take the top job.
Germany's electoral system usually results in coalition governments. After the election, weeks of negotiations are expected to form a new government. This is only the fourth time in Germany's post-World War II history that the Bundestag has been dissolved early.
