It's starting to feel like winter in Colorado. Temperatures have dropped, and ski resorts are already making snow. This weekend, several popular ski areas like Winter Park, Vail, Aspen, and Monarch Mountain are expecting some snowfall. But the real excitement is at some southern resorts, where up to 30 inches could be dumped. The Wolf Creek Ski Area and Telluride could see up to 26 and 30 inches respectively.
Ski resorts like Arapahoe Basin and Loveland have already started their snowmaking machines. They're hoping to open soon, maybe even in November. Copper Mountain and Keystone Resort have also begun making snow. Winter Park Resort even invested $37 million to upgrade its snowmaking system.
The National Weather Service released its Winter Outlook, but it’s not clear yet where exactly the most snow will fall. However, a La Niña pattern might bring more snow to the north. Unfortunately, the southern parts of Colorado might have a dry winter, with drought continuing across the state.
Skiers can look forward to a new tool from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in November. This tool will help them plan their ski days. For now, the Colorado Ski Country's Snow Report page keeps everyone updated about the snow situation at different mountains.
