As Hurricane Helene approaches, Columbia is taking action to protect its infrastructure. The city's public works crews are working non-stop to prepare for the worst. Robert Anderson, the Public Works Director, highlights three critical tasks: ensuring vehicles are fueled and ready, clearing wastewater drains, and making sure storm drains can manage heavy rainfall. "Safety first," he says. "If you see a downed power line, stay clear." Crews are also checking and cleaning catch basins to keep stormwater flowing smoothly. Anderson explains, "We want our system working at its best. If it rains heavily, we want the drains ready to handle it." Some business owners in Five Points are watching Helene's progress closely, but Anderson reassures that the city is ready to block off flooding-prone areas if needed. "We have barricades pre-positioned," he adds, "so we can act fast if flooding occurs."
