Girls explore science in the great outdoors

South Bend, USAWednesday, April 22, 2026

St. Patrick’s County Park is gearing up to host a one-of-a-kind event—GALS (Girls Leading in STEM)—on April 25, exclusively for girls in grades 5 through 8. Forget textbooks and lectures; this hands-on science day is all about digging, observing, and discovering alongside real scientists who are breaking ground in their fields.

What to Expect: A Day of Real-World Science

From 9:30 AM to 3:15 PM, participants will trade classroom chairs for lab coats, nets, and magnifying glasses, diving into activities like:

🔹 Soil Sleuthing with Erica Price (University of Notre Dame) Get your hands dirty analyzing soil samples and uncover the microscopic world beneath our feet.

🔹 Fish Behavior Watch with Katrina Whitlow (Saint Mary’s College) Peer into the lives of aquatic creatures and see how they interact in their natural habitat.

🔹 Aquatic Insect Examinations with Jennifer Tank’s Team (Notre Dame) Study the tiny but mighty insects that play a crucial role in our ecosystems.

🔹 Mosquitoes & Public Health: A Discussion with Lelia Burley-Sanford Learn about the science behind mosquito-borne diseases and how researchers tackle real-world health challenges.

Why GALS Matters: Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists

Middle school is a critical time when many girls lose interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). GALS changes that by: ✅ Putting science in action—no passive learning here. Girls will solve, explore, and engage with real research. ✅ Showing real female role models—scientists who look like them, breaking barriers in their fields. ✅ Breaking down financial barriers—thanks to local funding, registration is free, ensuring every girl has the chance to participate.

Limited Spots Available—Don’t Miss Out!

With space limited, early registration is highly recommended. This isn’t just another school trip—it’s an unforgettable experience that could spark a lifelong passion for science.
