In a mesmerizing display of natural wonders, a biofluorescent frog and a bioluminescent mushroom have captured the hearts of science enthusiasts worldwide. The unlikely duo has won the People's Choice Award at the Beaker Street Science Photography Prize 2024, held in Tasmania. The prize, which recognizes the most captivating and thought-provoking scientific images, was won by photographer Toby Schrapel's stunning shot of the glowing pair. The blue glow emanating from the frog's eyes and body is a result of a unique biochemical process. The frog's surface absorbs light at one wavelength and reemits it at another, creating the striking blue glow. Meanwhile, the ghost fungus, as it's known, glows brightly at night, giving the unlikely pair an otherworldly appearance. Schrapel, the photographer behind the winning image, stumbled upon the glowing duo while searching for a rare mushroom on a pine plantation in Tasmania. "When I first saw them together, I thought to myself, 'This is my chance to get something absolutely magical,'" Schrapel recalls. The Beaker Street Science Photography Prize 2024 is part of the Beaker Street Festival, a week-long celebration of science for adults in Tasmania each August. The festival aims to inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world, and the winning image is sure to do just that.
