The Chevy Bolt EV, a budget-friendly electric car, is soon to be discontinued.
Factory Transformation
The Kansas factory, previously dedicated to the Bolt EV, will now produce:
- A Buick SUV from China
- A Chevrolet Equinox from Mexico
Why the Switch?
- Increased costs of building cars in China and Mexico
- U.S. taxes on imports
- End of federal electric car credit (up to $7,500 off)
The Bolt EV's Fate
- Last production in about 18 months
- Priced at $29,990, one of the cheapest new electric cars in the U.S.
Future Plans for the Kansas Factory
- 2027: Production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox (currently made in Mexico)
- 2028: Production of the next Buick Envision (a compact SUV currently made in China)
GM's Statement
- The Bolt was always meant to be a short-term model
- Future affordable EVs planned, but details are unclear
