Goalie Interference Is Turning Into a League Headache

The NHL’s replay system was meant to clear up mistakes, not create new ones. Now, the league is fighting a growing problem with how it handles goalie interference calls. Teams no longer know what the rules really say about a player touching a goalie in the crease. When a play is sent to review, officials sometimes rule it differently from what the teams expect. Pittsburgh’s general manager said this last week after a challenge failed against Buffalo. In that game, a player named Josh Doan touched the goalie in the crease and the goal was kept. Pittsburgh lost the challenge and received a two‑minute penalty for trying to appeal. He also mentioned a similar play that happened the same night against Columbus, which was overturned.

And he talked about other games where his own players made contact that should have stopped a goal, but the calls went either way. The problem isn’t just Pittsburgh. Many teams are losing their chances to overturn bad calls. Last season, more than half of interference challenges were successful. This season only about a third are won. That drop is hard to explain by chance or bad judgment. It shows something has changed in how the rules are applied or how officials read them. Because so many goals hinge on these calls, fans and players feel the league is not treating games fairly. The uncertainty hurts teams’ chances to win and frustrates everyone who loves the sport.
