Gold Complexes that Change Color When Crushed: A Cool Science Experiment
Saturday, November 30, 2024
One of them, luminogen IV, barely glows at all after being crushed, showing a special kind of color change called high-contrast mechanochromic fluorescence quenching. By looking at how the X-ray diffraction patterns change and studying the crystal packing structure of one of the complexes, scientists could explain this amazing color change effect. They even found a way to use luminogen IV to make a super cool system for hiding and revealing information.
