Gold's Building Blocks: Solving the Nanocluster Puzzle
Nanostructure lab/facilityWednesday, December 25, 2024
Recently, they created models of a specific type of gold nanocluster, known as Au29. By mixing and matching those gold building blocks, they discovered something interesting. When they calculated the energy involved, one stacking pattern turned out to be much more stable than the others. It's like when you're trying to stack blocks, and one way just seems to fit better.
Understanding why these gold units prefer certain patterns could be a big deal. It might help us design better nanoclusters. Who knows? This could open up new ways to use gold in everything from technology to medicine.
