The BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) awards are a big deal in the UK. They celebrate the best athletes of the year, with the main prize going to the most popular one. But golfers have had a tough time winning this award.

A Rare Win for Golfers

Only two golfers have ever won the top prize:

  • Dai Rees in 1957
  • Nick Faldo in 1989

Since then, golfers have struggled to make an impact.

Recent Struggles

  • 2016: Danny Willett won the Masters but only got 0.3% of the vote.
  • 2019: Georgia Hall won the Open Championship but didn't even make the ballot.
  • 2022: The same thing happened to Matt Fitzpatrick after his U.S. Open win.

This made many people, including Ian Poulter, question the fairness of the awards.

Rory McIlroy's Success and Snubs

Rory McIlroy has had a lot of success in golf. In 2014, he won the PGA Championship and the Open Championship. But he didn't win the SPOTY that year. Instead, Lewis Hamilton won.

McIlroy was also nominated in 2023 but chose not to attend the ceremony. He said the awards are a popularity contest and not what they used to be.

The Favoritism Debate

The SPOTY awards have a history of favoring certain sports:

  • Track and field athletes have won the most, with 19 wins.
  • Formula One racers and tennis and soccer players have also done well.

But golfers have struggled to get recognition.

Questions of Fairness

This raises questions about the fairness of the awards. Are they really about the best athletes, or are they about popularity? And why do golfers seem to get left behind?
