Goodbye to Medical Debt on Credit Reports!
USATuesday, January 7, 2025
High healthcare costs are a big problem for many Americans. Some estimates say a large part of the population has medical debt. Recently, medical bills have become the most common collection item on credit reports.
The Biden administration has been working on making life easier for people dealing with higher living costs. They want to protect consumers and help them get loans. In the past, the three largest credit reporting agencies agreed to remove nearly 70% of medical debt from consumer credit reports.
Now, Harris announced that states have wiped out over $1 billion in medical debt for more than 750, 000 Americans using funds from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. They plan to eliminate another $7 billion in debt for nearly 3 million people by the end of next year. North Carolina also set up a program where 99 hospitals promised to get rid of up to $4 billion in unpaid bills for almost 2 million low- and middle-income residents.
